News for Animania Festival Melbourne 2010:

Animania Festival is coming to Melbourne this April

SYDNEY – March 29, 2010- Animania, Australia's biggest and original Japanese pop culture festival will be coming to Melbourne's Rydges Hotel, after a successful Sydney event.

There are a number of quirky, family-friendly activities including Giant Twister, the Gamer Room, origami mini-workshops, karaoke, and classic anime screenings.

ATTRACTIONS:
COSPLAY
Catch Animania's most popular attractions, the Animania Festival Cosplay Competition and the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) Pre-selections! Cosplay, a form of performance art is a costume spectacular bringing together vivid colour, extravagance, and eccentricity in a showcase of devotion by fans. From the catwalk to role-play skits, cosplay is open to everyone! Our special guest judge for the WCS event will include Andrea Tan, the winner of the 2009 WCS pre-selections in Singapore.

ART ARENA
Participate in mini-workshops and competitions such as the Doodling Art Competition, open to all participants. Or, support local talent with selected artworks on sale from some of Australia's finest independent artists.

ASIAN BALL JOINTED DOLLS (ABJD) SHOWCASE
Discover more about the art of the anime-inspired, customisable dolls that have gained international popularity across Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. Individually sculpted and hand-casted, they are truly a unique aesthetic. With a showcase for doll owners to display their collection, everyone is welcome!

Other activities include:

  • Cosplay Chess: Instead of chess pieces, cosplayers (or costume-players) act out their chess piece on a giant chess board - dressed as their favourite Japanese pop-culture personality!
  • Battleship: A funky twist on dodgeball – the team that sinks the most "ships" wins!
  • Newspaper Cosplay: A game of stylish improvisation in costume-making.
  • GAME SHOW: A take on Japan's wacky game-show genre, filled with laughter, music, audience participation, and free giveaways!
